Asian Paints Trucare Sparc Interior Primer is the water-thinnable undercoat that goes on before your emulsion — and it is the step most people are tempted to skip, which is exactly why it’s worth explaining what it actually does.

A primer does three things a top coat cannot. It seals a porous surface, so the emulsion sits on the wall instead of soaking into it — which is what turns two coats into three. It provides adhesion, giving the top coat something to grip so the finish doesn’t flake in a year. And it resists alkali, blocking the cement salts in masonry from attacking the paint film from behind, which is the usual cause of patchy discolouration on new plaster.

The practical effect is that priming increases the coverage of your top coat. Primer costs less per litre than emulsion, so sealing the wall first generally reduces the total cost of the job rather than adding to it. This primer is also fortified with fungicide, useful in humid conditions, and gives a smooth white base that helps the top-coat colour read true.
